남자와 사자

A Lion and a Man chanced to travel in a company through the forest.

사자와 남자가 우연히 숲을 함께 여행하게 되었다.

They soon began to quarrel, for each of them boasted that he and his kind were far superior to the other both in strength and mind.

그들은 곧 다투기 시작했는데, 서로 자기와 자기 종족이 상대보다 힘과 지혜에서 훨씬 뛰어나다고 자랑했기 때문이다.

Now they reached a clearing in the forest and there stood a statue.

그들은 이제 숲 속의 빈터에 도착했고, 거기에는 동상이 서 있었다.

It was a representation of Heracles in the act of tearing the jaws of the Nemean Lion.

그 동상은 헤라클레스가 네메아의 사자의 턱을 찢고 있는 모습을 나타내고 있었다.

“See,” said the man, “that’s how strong we are! The King of Beasts is like wax in our hands!”

"봐라," 남자가 말했다, "이게 우리가 얼마나 강한지 보여주는 거야! 짐승의 왕도 우리 손안에서는 밀랍 같지!"

“Ho!” laughed the Lion, “a Man made that statue. It would have been quite a different scene had a Lion made it!”

"허!" 사자가 웃으며 말했다, "그 동상은 사람이 만든 거야. 만약 사자가 만들었다면 장면이 아주 다르게 나왔을 걸!"
